Vogue Cover: Serena Williams Talks Emergency C-Section and Post-Partum Complications
Serena Williams and her baby girl, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, cover February 2018 issue of Vogue Magazine. This makes Olympia, as her mum fondly calls her, the youngest cover star so far. So cool to have a superstar mom right!! serena williams post partum
Serena appears on the issue with her husband, Alexis Ohanian and family including sister, Venus Williams, where she reveals that she suffered complications after giving birth to her daughter for two months as she was interviewed by writer Rob Haskell.
The tennis star said in the magazine that she had an easy pregnancy, but had to undergo an emergency C-section due to her baby girl’s low heart rate during contractions.
After having an emergency C-section, she knew that something was very, very wrong when she suddenly felt short of breath and was concerned she was having blood clots.
It turned out the star, who had to stop taking her anticoagulant medications leading up the delivery, was right, and had indeed developed several clots in her lungs.
She was immediately given a drip, but constant coughing from her pulmonary embolism opened up the scar from the c-section, therfore causing her abdomen quickly to be filled with her now-thinned blood from the same drugs which were saving her life.
After all that, Williams had to have a filter inserted into a major vein to prevent any possible clots from entering her lungs, and was forced to go on bed rest for the next six weeks.
“I was so happy to change diapers, but on top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder,” the athlete’s husband, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian who was by her side through it all, told Vogue.
Serena has recovered from the ordeal and talked about the challenges of motherhood, admitting that she has broken down sometimes while comparing it to the challenges on the court.
‘Sometimes I get really down and feel like, Man, I can’t do this. It’s that same negative attitude I have on the court sometimes. I guess that’s just who I am,’ said Serena.
‘No one talks about the low moments – the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry.’
She added: ‘I’ve broken down I don’t know how many times. Or I’ll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, Why do I feel so sad when I have a beautiful baby? The emotions are insane.
Vogue also shared a video of Serena doing the #LemonDanceChallenge and in our opinion she killed it!
